The world is full of wonders. The fascination of earth lovers lies in knowing the wonders of the Earth- and for some, it lies in some of the most phenomenal masterpieces created by humans. Then there are those who have a strong affinity for the sea. Nothing is more intriguing to them than a list of the marvels of the underwater world.

Back in 1989, for the sea enthusiasts, CEDAM International, ocean preservation and research organization, came up with a list of wonders of the underwater world. So, now you do not have to be curious about the water and what lies underneath. Here is the list of the 7 Wonders of The Underwater World:

1) Nothern Red Sea

The northern Red Sea is known as “The Underwater Eden,” and it is home to the world’s most beautiful coral leaves. It gets situated between Asia and Africa in the Indian Ocean. The Northern Red Sea measures 169,000 square miles and is the home of 70 species of coral, over 500 species of fish, 30 species of soft coral, and much more. 

2) The Great Barrier Reef

Thousands of people visit the Great Barrier Reef because of its beauty. The Great Barrier Reef is located in Australia and can get seen from outer space. This barrier reef forms 900 islands and 29,00 individual reefs, spanning 1600 miles in length and making it the vast carol reef system in the world. A fun fact about this reef is that it is home to a diverse range of sea life species. You do not want to miss out on a place like this!

3) Palau Coral Reefs

The Republic of Palau is an island country in the western Pacific. It is made up of 400 islands and gets surrounded by a reef covering 525 square kilometers. About 37% of the Palau reef consists of fringing reefs, the other half is composed of barrier reefs, and the rest gets conjured up of atolls. You can find more than 350 species of hard corals, 300 species of sponges, 13,00 species of reef fish, and 200 species of soft coral living there. 

4) The Belize Barrier Reef

The Belize Barrier Reef, located off the coast of Belize, is said to be the world’s second-largest reef system. It is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef that measures 900 kilometers. In 1842, it got described as “the most remarkable reef in the West Indies” by Charles Darwin. Surprisingly, only 10% of the reef has gotten documented and researched. Turneffe Atoll, Glover’s Reef, and Lighthouse Reef are the three Caribbean atolls that reside in the Belize barrier reef. Furthermore, it is the best location for diving and snorkeling.

5) Deep-Sea Vents

Deep-sea vents are fissures deep in the ocean floor that let super-heated water escape the Earth’s crust. It is also referred to as “Hydrothermal Vents” because they can produce two types of smokers: black and white. Deep-sea vents, which can get found to live 2100 meters deep in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, were discovered in 1979 near Galapagos Island. This underwater wonder is a home for organisms that benefit from the chemicals ejected- and the environment around the vents is said to be biologically reproductive.

6) The Galápagos Islands

The Galápagos Islands get located in the South American country called Ecuador. These are volcanic islands that arose from beneath the Earth. This Island is not your typical place where you will find coral or fish. Instead, this wonderland is the area where wildlife lives. Here you will discover Giant Turtles (Galápagos Tortoise), the Galapagos sea lion, the Marine Laguna, and the Galápagos Penguins. 

7) Lake Baikal

Lake Baikal rounds out the list of natural wonders. Lake Baikal, located in Serbia, Russia, is the world’s second-largest freshwater lake. You may be surprised to learn that this lake is 25 million years old and holds 20% of the world’s fresh water. Additionally, it is the deepest lake ever at 1,642 meters.

Final Words

The depths of the oceans, islands, lakes and other bodies of water have always been a mystery. However, Underwater Robotics is making exploration more accessible for scientists to reach spots that were previously untouchable.
